[P4444][Mal] Ionic Liquid as Forward Osmosis Draw Solute in Real Wastewater Concentration

conference papers

Forward osmosis (FO) is considered as an emerging new membrane-based technology for concentration of wastewater with electrical energy consumption significantly lower than that of reverse osmosis (RO). However, draw solution recovery after FO process is still a challenging issue. In recent years, thermo-responsive compounds have been highly expected as draw solutes for FO process because they can be regenerated easily by temperature change. In this research, the phase separation behavior of the thermally responsive ionic liquid, [P4444][Mal]1,2, was investigated and its FO application on volume reduction of real industrial wastewater from a Taiwanese company will be demonstrated. The thermally stimulated phase separation process can reduce the energy for draw solution regeneration. The wastewater concentration factor of 2.8 was achieved.
