TREATMENT OF PET PROCESSING WASTEWATER BY ANAERBIC PROCESS

conference papers

The objective of this paper was to develop an Upflow Anaerobic Sludge Bed (UASB) process for treating high strength esterification processing wastewater generated from the PET manufacturing plant. The characteristics of this wastewater were low pH (near 3.0) and high COD (approximate 40,000 mg/L), the major components were ethylene glycol and aldehydes, which were anaerobic biodegradable but the methanogenic inhibition was observed when COD was over 2000 mg/L.

The UASB reactor followed by Sequencing Batch Reactor (SBR) were provided as a complete treatment process. The results of the feasibility study indicated the appropriate organic loading rates were 5 kg/m3.d and 0.8 kg/m3.d for UASB and SBR respectively. The discharged effluent quality was satisfied to ROC-EPA  standards.

A PET plant, which located in the middle of Taiwan, had constructed two full scale UASB reactors of 450m3 were started up in the November of 1992. The installation cost and land requirement were also discussed in this article.
