The ultrasound is an emerging and promising cell disintegration technology for waste sludge treatment. The frequency of ultrasound applied is 20 kHz or greater. It produces “cavitation” with microbubbles in liquid medium and causes intensive shearing phenomena and generation of free radicals for the enhancement of sludge disintegration. Ultrasound can be easily combined with the biological treatment units in wastewater treatment process to provide a simple and effective solution for waste sludge reduction with small footprint and substantial cost reduction.
